our eco-commitment
As part of Vincent House's commitment to being a sustainable, socially and environmentally responsible business we have recently embarked on a programme of improvements and developments aimed at reducing our carbon footprint. We invited our employees to come up with a name for the programme and George Bocian, one of our night porters, came up with the winning entry PROJECT BUTTERFLY.
As well as being a beautiful example of the natural world, butterflies also symbolise transformation and awakening.
We invited The Learning Journey (www.thelearningjourney.co.uk) a community interest company established to help ex-offenders resettle successfully that provides design and communications products and services, to create an appropriate logo for the project. The attractive butterfly symbol they created is being used to promote the project throughout the House.
We plan to achieve our objectives through a series of ecological and economical measures such as decreasing our energy usage (which benefits everyone at Vincent House by also reducing our overheads), maximising our recycling and introducing a range of environmentally efficient practices, which will be publicised to residents through notices in your room and information displayed in reception.
We ask all of our residents and visitors to help us in achieving our environmental goals.

our environmental performance
At the beginning of 2008 we commissioned eco-consultant Donnachadh McCarthy (www.3acorns.co.uk) to assess the environmental performance of Vincent House. He followed up his thorough inspection of all areas of the House with a comprehensive report that identified a number of potential improvements and made several proposals aimed at helping Vincent House reduce its 'carbon footprint'.
Since the assessment, we have been measuring our use of energy and water to establish our starting point for the project. We have also initiated some minor changes around the House, for example sensor lighting has been installed in some common areas. However, if we are to achieve our primary aim of reducing our carbon footprint with a view to becoming carbon neutral in the future, we need to make many further improvements requiring the involvement and commitment of everyone who lives and works at Vincent House and even those who just visit.
Transforming Vincent House, which was built 70 years ago, into an environmentally friendly building will present interesting challenges, but we are confident that with everyone's commitment we will do so. We also intend to record our progress and the programme of improvements so that we can develop a model to promote to other similar organisations.
We will be adding further information about our progress on this page and news about our eco-activities will also be featured on our blog - we hope you will log on regularly to read our updates.
'Carbon footprint' is a commonly used expression but what does it actually mean?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day to day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation.
The carbon footprint is a measure of all greenhouse gases we produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent. A 'carbon footprint' is made up of the sum of two parts: the primary footprint made up of our direct emissions through things such as consumption of energy and transport use and the secondary footprint is our indirect emissions from the whole lifecycle of the products we use.
Individuals and organisations can aim to become 'carbon neutral' by reducing and offsetting carbon emissions.
