The Committee hosted an event to celebrate the ‘Art Works for Vincent House’ scheme on Wednesday 13th May which was extremely successful and attracted many new contacts to the House from a range of organizations.

The event launched an exhibition featuring the story of Vincent House’s new permanent display of prints and decorative panels in the residential corridors (see earlier post) and was opened by former Chief Inspector of Prisons, Lord David Ramsbotham. Lord Ramsbotham spoke persuasively about the value of schemes that help offenders rehabilitate and how they help reduce re-offending rates which in turn is a huge benefit society.

The exhibition transformed the lounge into a professional looking ‘art gallery’ and was open to residents and visitors from Thursday 14th May until Friday 29th May. During that time many people visited and admired the pieces of art on display and took an interest in the presentation giving the background to the scheme and the art selections. Some of the art works have since been sold, including a couple of the original paintings.

On Monday 27th April a transformation of the corridors of Vincent House began with the installation of ‘Art Works for Vincent House’ an exciting project initiated last summer. Whilst its style divides opinions and it certainly stands out from the neighbouring properties, Vincent House has an unmistakeable look that makes it a work of art in its own right. To complement the Art Moderne style of the House and to make the interior more inspirational and interesting we decided to decorate the corridors with works of art. We selected The Learning Journey (TLJ) to carry out our commission. TLJ is a social enterprise focused on helping ex-offenders to resettle successfully after prison through delivering professional services in art, design and media.

To ensure the art works reflected the origins of the House, TLJ set out to build the exhibition by creating a collection of images taken from the art, advertising, pottery, textiles and graphic design of a period spanning 20 years either side of the completion of Vincent House in 1939, from the 1920’s to the early 1960’s. TLJ sampled more than 300 pieces from 80 artists and 100 poster designs including the store of posters in the archives of the London Transport Museum to represent what Londoners of this period would have encountered on a daily basis.

The finished collection comprises 63 prints from this body of work and a further 63 original decorative panels inspired by works from the period. Hand painted onto canvas these panels, which are interspersed with the prints to heighten the impact, have been newly created by TLJ. Limited editions of framed prints and cards featuring these original artworks are available to purchase – please ask at reception for more information.

Among the artists and designers we have chosen to represent and to draw inspiration from are:

Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Lyonel Feininger, L S Lowry, Marcello Dudovic, Tamara De Lempicka, Susie Cooper, Clarice Cliff, Piet Mondrian, Victor Vasarely, A M Cassandre, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Wyndham Lewis, Edouard Benedictus, Henry Moore and Henri Matisse.

To launch the project we are holding a presentation in the lounge 8.00-8.30pm on Wednesday 29th April when representatives from TLJ will talk about the organisation’s work, the ‘Art Works for Vincent House’ commission and explain the background to the selection of artworks. A complimentary glass of wine will be served. We do hope you will be able to join us and we look forward to receiving your comments about this exciting new chapter in the life of Vincent House.
